Jay
« on: June 08, 2011, 01:25:27 PM »
I rescued this four week old Jay about four days ago. She was tumbling from a very high tree and I managed to block her fall.
I was surrounded by cats offering to help as well.
First night I kept her in my room and fed her by opening her mouth and placing the food far back in her throat. Over the next couple of days I got her eating from a stick. I spent many hours teaching her and now she eats from a bowl. I can't let her go because her chances of survival at the moment would be slim. I have looked after hundreds of birds so I know best. She greets me now with a squawk and flies on my shoulder.
She likes scrambled egg, corn beef, crushed nuts, cat food, bacon, mash potato with chopped up greens, worms and fruit.

Absolutely beautiful, she looks so lovely and content, you seem to be doing a great job with her. how lovely to have that experience and the pleasure of being able to start a young fledging out in life.

enjoy your time with her, no doubt she will stay around when she fledges......

How lovely! When I was a little girl, I've managed to raise a young blackbird. I took care of it for weeks and even brought it to school with me. The whole experience taught me to have a lot of respect for bird parents, it's hard work! Good luck, Jed. My birdie loved cat-food too  :)

She missed me while I was away in Buxton although I had friends feeding her.
I had to spend a few hours with her to make her forget my absence. I think I am forgiven.
I tried her on a mixture of corn beef and black pudding and she loved it, except she was really thirsty afterwards.
Too much salt in the black pudding.

She is now five weeks old I can assure you or anybody she is completely happy with her new home.
All this nonsense about 'leave them go' is rubbish. Back in the eighties birds and furry animals came closer to
our homes and gardens for the first time. It was tough for them out in the wild. Still is. Our excuse is that they belong in the wild. The RSPB will tell you that. They are wrong!

Years ago, when in grammar school, I made friends with a beautiful multicolored wild pigeon - by mimicing his cooings and chortles and feeding him finely crushed  pieces of peanuts. After a couple hours I was able to get close enough to actually pick up that beautiful bird, which then stood calmly in the palm of hand without showing the least bit of fear!

The rest of the story isn't so nice, though, and (to this day) I have a hard time NOT beating the crap out of the boy who stole that pigeon, each time I run into him around town.

You can zoom in on pictures now by placing the curser over the picture.

Your doing a great job with that bird and believe me she will never want to move back in the wild, like you said they are
leaving the wild by various means or ways. Mostly of necessity. You are saving this bird my friend and I'd like to say well done.

Hi there, that is just so good to watch. I can tell you have and share a very special quality or understanding with wild birds.
It speaks volumes about you. I can tell you are honest, caring, understanding and probably like animals and birds as much as people.
Probably rarer than the bird you are so devoted to.
God bless you.

What can I say.....
I'm passionate about what I do, that's it. I love wild life and it was my second career choice after violins.
I look after my friends and will be there if they need help and I wish the rest of the world was like that too.
I suppose it's another way of overcoming the beastly beautitudes in all of us.
................... changing the subject!
Some one said to me today, or rather quoted a hard fact. Most men die before their wives or girl friends. It's a fact.
The reason  behind it is 'self defence'
Never heard a truer word. How I got on to this is weird.
