Spring has well and truly sprung, fish are at it, the frog's spawn has now turned into little frogs and their babies are alive and kicking in the pond, and the downstairs neighbours dog had six puppies all the way through Friday night.

In my younger days, those halsian days, I spent a huge amount of time studying wild life, frogs, birds and bees and fish and I have begun to notice lately or over the past five years or so that wasps have become diminutive in size, at least by three millimetres. I'm not joking. I am wondering if their sting has also diminutised, lessened. My fear is that it may not have and my worst fear is that it might just be more deadly. Before I begin to research this I wonder if any of you have noticed this. I dont believe it is linked with climate change but we are observing a step up in evolution.....

Hi Jed, this is interesting because I have noticed this also. Wasps are now smaller but I also don't know if they have become more deadly. I absolutely hate them and am terrified of them. We have not seen so many lately but as you have pointed out, they are definitely smaller. Come September we may see a lot more of the buggers. One thing I will say is that I had one in the house today and I grabbed a news paper and I had no trouble escorting it out the window. Maybe they are less aggressive. I dont want to find out the hard way but keep me posted if you find out more about this. Do they get in your workshop?

Sometimes; and all work comes to a stand still. I would rather fight a grissly bear than face a wasp. When I was a kid I used to poke their hives just to get a run, it was exciting then to be chased. In my workshop I have a couple of spiders watching over me and I always pray that some how they will do their work before I come back in.

If time is taken to look at wasps and understand them, I believe we can grow to love them.  On spring watch a few weeks ago they had a wasps nest, which was truly unbelievable.  The guy who featured this said his favourite creature was wasps.... and if we understand them and get to know them we would not find them so frightening....

Most people I know as soon as a wasp comes anyway near they flap around run away, shout out.  All of this drives the wasp to frenzy and makes things worse. Breath attracts the wasp more, and hitting the wasp away drives it to sting.

I cant say I am a lover of them, but I have learnt not to go into a panic and be calm, and this seems to help.

As to there being less wasps I have found this also, hardly see any now.... a while ago there were loads of larger wasps which I heard had come from abroad, and they were more aggressive, but not seen this for a while.  The bee population is also under threat, which is a true shame.  I have planted lots of plants to attract bees and we do now get a lot of bees in the garden which is great.

Well thats it on wasps from me!!!

I was very impressed with your pond and all the lights around it.
You counted 19 frogs but I think there are more. I like the shells and logs too. Must be an ideal spot when you have the smell of freshly cut grass.
