Bears, Cougars, and Snapping Turtles
« on: November 17, 2009, 10:50:27 PM »
The black bear was recently hit and killed (by an SUV) while crossing a rural highway in Covington county, which is just east of Escambia country where I live. A friend in California sent me the picture of the cougar. Mr./Mrs. Snapping turtle was lying in the stream next to my house, so ran back inside and grabbed my camera. Noticing that it hadn't moved I went down the bank and saw that the top of its shell was partially crushed and broken out. I picked up a heavy stick and touched its head to see if the creature was still alive, fortunately it was. Don't know what happened but the creature could have been run over by a car, or vandalistic kids in the neighboring areas may have thrown a heavy chunk of granite rock on the poor thing. Don't know whether it has survived or not, since I haven't seen it since May. I've also found a (more than realistic) photograph of the creature so called "Bigfoot". The image was taken (at night) by an automatic camera secured in a tree where a deer hunter (in Pennsylvania) had placed bait along a trail to see how many big bucks were in the area. If possible I'll post that photo, it is truly amazing.

It is a wonder that the driver and passengers in the SUV weren't injured or killed during this incident, which happened in the late evening (right after dark) if memory serves. I've never seen a bear that large, except for the grizzlies out in Montana. The Conecuh river swamp and its surrounding flood plain is full of wild animals. They are constantly on the move in search of food, or prey, and many unfortunate accidents like this happen all the time down here in the south, especially when doe deer bring their fawns out from heavy cover to graze in the tall grasses near the rural highways and byways.

Several years ago, during the rutting season, right before dusk, a huge Whitetail buck deer chased a doe across the highway right in front of my truck. I was travelling at 65 mph and the right front side of the truck hit the buck in front of its right back leg, knocking him at least 20 feet into the air, while his dead body turned a full circle (in slow motion) and then hit ground quite a distance further down the road.

Had I hit them both, and at the right instant, the buck (massive horns and all) could have easily come over the hood and right through the windshield - which could have killed me instantly. Something that I've pondered over many times, and thank God that I wasn't injured.

I did stop, back up, and drag that buck into the bed of my truck; and then took it to one of my cousins who skinned and dressed the carcass for half of the meat that was left fit to eat.

Hi Henri! Yes we have lots of wild "critters" roaming around down here. One spring day in 1967, while walking down the gravel road leading to our old home place, I heard hounds running hard through the woods and their loud baying indicated a very hot trail. Suddenly, a black panther ran out in the road several yards ahead of me, then turned back when confronted with a high fence and bushes so thick it would have been almost impossible for it to get through them. Then came the hounds and all hell broke loose! I turned around and ran as fast as I could back up the road to borrow a shotgun from a neighbor while the panther and the hounds were duking it out. Of course, the panther won and quickly disappeared back into the woods before I got halfway to the man's house. But I still asked Mr. Matthew Jernigan for that shotgun, so to make sure I got home, in case that big old black panther decided to have me for dinner! To be honest, even armed with that shotgun, I was scared out of my wits walking past where everything happened!
