Jed's workshop
« on: August 25, 2009, 04:29:01 AM »
I had the pleasure today to call in and see Jed. There was violins every where in his house and he told me that there would  be more if his wife  didn't keep on to him to take them out to the workshop.

He had two lovely new violins hanging up outside under a canopy and by god they looked amazing. In his workshop I saw some posters of Guarneri and Strad violins and I was up to my ankles in wood shavings. The smell was magic, he had been cooking up pine rosin and it made me feel hungry.

I saw some rather complicatd repairs on the bench but he was quite dismissive about the importance of the work in progress. I expected him to be at least enthusiastic , positive and talkative. but he was neither. Strange guy!
However, when we went back in the house he picked up a violin and played some jazz stuff that sounded really nice and then drifted into Irish music which I don't undrstand. He went on to explain to me the similarities in styles of music and then went off on a tangent about wasps.

Looking at his instrumets I would say that he clearly knows his stuff.
His instruments are very exact when compared to the Cremonese fiddles.
In fact I would say that his instruments are as good as any Italian violins I have tried. He will defintely be remembered as the greaest copiest of our century...up there with Vuillaume and the Voller brothers

I dont know what to say!
Yes, if I was un-enthusiastic at some moments I am sorry. But I do have moments when  music is not on my mind...
thank you for the comment on my instruments!

Hello Jed, I play on one of your violins and I am very happy with it.
It has a growling G string which I love and the balance over all strings is  nice and even... no surprises
Your fiddles are brilliant and why would I want a Guarneri?

Wasps are my big worry every summer. They interfere in almost all of my out door activities. They always come when I am varnishing and on one occasion they made me drop a freshly varnished violin and wood shavings got stuck to it.

I almost fell out with a scientist friend over the importance of wasps in our Eco system. His view was that everything is important. I maintain that quite a number of living things become extinct over time and we don't really see any gaping holes in our enviornment subsequently. My research has shown me that wasps cannot do anything that spiders cant do. I will explain this in a moment but first let me say that wasps are like some races of people who will never integrate with other different races. They are unfriendly and live only for themselves. They make a very interesting nest from an engineering perspective but that is all. They don't make honey. They do not believe in sharing. People say that if you keep your mouth shut wasps will not pester you.

Catching up on my earlier point, wasps for what they do in the way of eating, spiders will do exactly that and with style. No stinging, no agression,
masters of peace and champions of engineering.

I see no reason not to hasten the extinction of wasps.
They will not allow you to drink coke on a beach without getting in your mouth and stinging you.
They invade every picnic and bbq.
They sting children.

They torment my daughter when she comes over for a meal in the garden.
Every one is on high alert, can't relax.
The smaller ones which we see this year pack a deadly sting.

We need to create a creature that will eat every wasp on the planet.
We all try to stay clear of them but our efforts are futile.
I got stung between my fingers as I was playing the violin, can wasps hear?

Are you ok?
I agree with you! If they cannot play the violin what do we need them for?

Jed, catch a thousand wasps in a jar and record the sound they make
in their frenzy to escape. See then if you can use this as a backing track
and write something for the fiddle to go with it.
Hurray! let's make them work!

Hi Tony, not a bad idea. They are very attracted to venitian turpentine.
Maybe they are coming over from Italy to sting violin makers here. Now you got me wondering. They are not like honey bees. I have not heard them make sounds. In a jar maybe they will make some sort of percussion.

If I could put a thousand of these inside a violin and cover the f holes with masking tape and play....what would happen?
I seriously do not have the courage to play a violin full of wasps. The thought of it makes me sick....

I'm coming to Bushey to hear all those great violinists, guitarists and double bass players and I will bring a news paper to swat those bees.

Yep!  can do anything with wood! a friend put an article through my letter box today about Beares in London. Nice photos of violins and of their team of restorers. Surprisingly written in plain english that I could undertand. It gave me an idea....

I thought about applying for a job at Beares. Now the last thing I need is a job but am incredibly interested in job applications. So, I might just do that.
Speaking of wood, I done the most crazy thing ever a few years ago. I had a neighbour who was so passionate about classic cars. He had a beautiful MG sports car, one of those convertable jobs. I know nothing about cars but he requested that  I maKe a wooden steering wheel for it. It had lovely brass rivets and apparently it never won a competition because it did not have the original wooden steering wheel. He had a sample of the original and brought it to my workshop. He could not afford to pay for it but said he would give me something that would be useful in my workshop.

With the sample he gave me which was about three inches long I proceeded and made the most beautiful steering wheel ever. After that, the car won every competition going. The judges examined that steering wheel and confirmed it was original. It matched all the wooden bits in the car like the dashboard and bits round the doors.

The whole job was interesting and the wood was beech. Maybe eleven thin layers glued together in a circle. That was a challenge and that's why I took it on. With the brass rivets in place it looked a $100.

For my work he gave me some syrenges for injecting glue into difficult places. I forgot to say he was a paramedic....That wheel was the nicest violin I ever made...

Hi Jed, I am lying on the floor chuckling my head off.
So now you make steering wheels for vintage cars. Just a moment, I have to lay back down again.lol
