Fiddlehell in Bushey
« on: July 10, 2009, 02:51:44 PM »
Hi Graham, we want to start advertising FH in mid October. 16, 17 18th.
I plan to get some fliers printed and would like some suggestions as to
what to have on the fliers, graphics and text.

Perhaps that collage would do for a graphic and all we need is text.
I would like to distribute to all the music colleges around as well as cover the Bushey village itself and the Library and pubs.

I want to pull in jazz fiddlers and Klezmer as well and have a good mix.
We can have a concert too and decide who wants to play in that. Not too much organisation I know but just a little backround effort. The venue will be the Royal oak in Bushey. We will aim to not stray from your original concept only try to make it bigger.

Be good to have jazz, bluegrass, klezmer, classical and Irish fiddle workshops and have Thwaites violin shop there and others. Thwaites is in Bushey and I can organise that. I will contact Chris Haigh and try get him there if that's ok! He does blues and jazz workshops and Pete Cooper and that bluegrass fiddler Bob W.....can't spell his surname, and of course yourself doing your stuff....a master class!
These are only suggestions and ultimately I will follow your lead.
I would like to get the leaflets printed asp.
Jed

Hi Jed,

Looks good!

I will post it on the Fiddle Forum site, and see what response we get there.

You don't have to "follow my lead" - your FH is whatever you make it.
Are there good, not too pricey,  places to stay nearby?

16th - 18th October

OK

I will do! I have organised food on the premises, the Royal Oak, so you will never be hungry. If you want to go out there are so many restaurents close by, Indian, Italian, English and Cinese, probably even more. I will tag them all in due course!

Hi Jed-

Good luck with your October Fiddle Hell!  Wish I could make it, but have some gigs that weekend...

I'll be running the Fiddle Hell in Groton, MA, USA in mid-November, and have done so for the last few years.  You might pick up some interesting ideas about workshops and FH events from this website: http://www.reinerfamilyband.com/fiddlehellmassac.html

Dave Reiner

dsreiner, thanks for that, very helpful indeed.
I have four people helping me with Fiddlehell, all with backrounds in organising events. In Bushey we have so many violin players and of course London is near by and we will get to them too.
Thanks again for your help and for joining the forum..
The dates for Fiddlehell in Bushey are 16, 17 and 18th October.

Crazy girl (Brend) I think we should meet up with Alan, the manager of the venue this week end  for a chat. This is just so we can give him an idea of what fiddlehell is all about and to give him the  opportunity to outline in the leaflet what he is providing for  FH . Also, we can look at providing a list of accomodation for visitors,  restaurents etc. and whatever else we deem useful to include in the leaflet, perhaps transportation might figure. I want to get the leaflet done and you Brend and I can design it. It has to go out to everyone in Bushey and Hertfordshire and other boroughs as well. We might even consider doing an add in the local papers.

I expect Alan will contribute towards the cost of advertising so he may want to advertise whatever he is going to do for us (food and drink wise). My friend Phil will do the printing. We can talk about who we will approach to do workshops etc. I will get Katherine Robb to bring her violin friends from the Purcell school and possibly members of staff. I will ask Chris Haigh to do something if he is not otherwise engaged. Loads to talk about and given that there is you and me and two others, their jobs will be to bring musicians  spread the word and generally help out on the days. There will be additional news on  http://www.fiddleforum.com/fiddleforum/index.php?topic=30591.0 and I will post there as well so that all is transparent..

Crazy girl (cg)
Remind me to contact my friend Laoise Davidson, she is a klezmer fiddler and head of the Jewish Music Institute. Also remind me to get Chris Brierley on board, he plays all kinds of music and Hannah Woolmer, a nice classical player. We must also contact the Irish Academy of Music in Hammersmith To get Mulkere and friends to come. I will see what Chris Garrick is doing on that week end also. After our meeting with Alan(the venue manager) we can then concentrate on musicians. Adam (helping with fiddlehell) will sort out a couple of acoustic guitarists to support us fiddlers and he will bring others.

I might do either a fiddle workshop or some bow rehairs, lets see how I feel. But in any case I will bring along some fine fiddles for all to try. I'm currently working on making two Guarneri pattern violins for an over seas client and I might just have one of those on show plus  my other violins.

[Edit] Spoken with Alan (Manager of the venue) today and all is good. We are working closely to make this a memorable event.

If you treat FH as a news item, you can get free advertising in local papers and on local radio, because they are always looking for copy.

FH Brum, Buxton and Bristol have always run on almost no budget, which means that we don't have to keep records etc.. Doing flyers and posters can be very cheap, but ads in papers pricey. Get them to do an article, or interview as a news, or local interest item.

If you want to keep the "free" nature of FHUK as it has been so far, it is essential to make sure that visiting fiddlers realise it is not a paid gig to give workshops etc. ALL of us are on an even field, no one pays or gets paid.

Of course , you might want to do something extra, e.g. a special gig to tie in, like the Swarbrick one in Bristol, but in a sense that was separate from FH.

If you got the two Chrises involved, we could do a jazz violin summit, either as a special concert., or just as a performance as part of FH Bushey.

But again, the ball is entirely in your court.

The gig could be a jazz summit. I am waiting for Chris Haigh's reply.
He seemed keen to come....

[edit]
Chris Haigh is coming and will do a workshop on Country fiddle and song accompaniment.

The highlight of this exciting event, is Sunday evening's concert when Jazz violinists Graham Clark, Chris Haigh and guitarist Richard Bolton go on stage together.
Tickets will be available for this concert at the venue.
Not heard yet from Chris Garrick or Pete Cooper. Chris Brierley(composer and violinist in most styles) will be there.
Laoise Davidson is coming, she is a klezmer fiddler and will bring friends.

Classical players will come from the Purcell School in Bushey. When I have some more names I will contact the local radio, papers and mags. We should have the fliers printed by Tuesday and some large posters to put up in Bushey.

We will also have fiddlers from the Irish Academy of music in Hammersmith.
This is all good and we have only just begun....but we need more! If any of you would like some fliers tell us and we will post them to you.....
