Bristol Fiddlehell
« on: June 23, 2009, 11:10:53 PM »
I'm working on a few fiddles at the moment, one is Lucy's from fiddlehell.
Should be sounding good when I'm finished with it. Had to do a soundpost patch and take care of many cracks and bulges. The heel where it joins the button was open so I have taken care of that. Few more things to do and cut a good bridge for it and it's fiddle heaven for Lucy.

Good! I am very glad that Lucy showed you her fiddle. She knew there was something wrong, but didn't know what to do about it.

So exciting – I can't wait to hear what she sounds like without that strange buzz! Graham, thanks so much for suggesting I ask Jed to look at the fiddle. And Jed, thanks for all your hard work.

Yes, a strange buzz - particularly notable (to me at least) on the open G. That's what started the original discussion with Graham. Really looking forward to picking it up tomorrow! Thanks again for the loan of the violin: really lovely.

Hi Lucy, the soundpost crack would have caused a buzz in addition to two seams which were open. There was not enough clearance on the fingerboard either, the longitudinal curve was not adequate for the G string.
I will be setting it up tomorrow morning and playing it in in the afternoon. All the old cracks have been undone and brought together flush. Before, one could feel that the surfaces were not brought together level.

Lucy, the violin is done and sounds great. That sound is worth a lot of money but more importantly she has been through a lot with all those repairs and come through singing better than ever. I'm well pleased :D
[Edit]
Got your mail and so pleased that you are happy with the sound. Shame I became so attached to that fiddle and its sound. I could not put it down. :'(
