You may also suggest ideas for the forum here. Do you think we should have a data base of documented instruments? Trade instruments?
What do you think?

Do you think we should have a violin every now and then to guess at is authenticity?
If you can think of another board we should have please tell us.

Jed, since you are a professional luthier and a true connoisseur all forms of data gathering and storage would only heighten the knowledge of those seeking information from a highly competent honest source. This is of paramount importance in promulgating interest towards historical and not so historical stringed instruments of all kinds. Would also create great interest in your abilities as a maker, restorer, appraiser, your forums website and new auction services.
A worldwide effort to translate many valuable manuscripts and photographic archives to digital format has been underway for a long time, GOOGLE playing a major role.  I think your ideas to ask for suggestions, informational input and sorting it out is a wonderful thing! The effort would be time consuming, entailing no small expenditure. Access to the assimilated information being justified by paid subscriptions, as other internet violin related data bases require.

Additionally, to my mind there is nothing more fun than to do side by side photographic comparisions of instruments by the same maker, their followers, soi~disant (self speaking) instruments that have yet to be properly recognized, identified, and recorded. The magnificent Ferdinando Ferdinandus being a recent prime example. People want and need to learn how to recognize these masters work and can learn if presented with the right educational opportunity. It is an humbling thought to even stand in the shadow of someone who can teach this knowledge. You, Jed, are the leader. Take us where you want to go, we will follow.

Well John, many people have suggested to me that I take up some sort of hobby and that it should not be work related. Something not so obsessional; like bird watching or some form of voluntary work. I dont no why they never suggest something that I am good at.

That to oneside, I think it would be a very useful and satisfying project to set up a data base of historical instruments and not so historical ones and not just purely pictorial, descriptive and who owns what like other websites have done but offering a critique and understanding of the styles and whims of the artists. Perhaps in this case their is a stronger case for doing something different. Something along the lines of an analysis of styles by important makers, not just cremonese. I mean really, whats documented is documented but that doesn't teach anyone much apart from that.

We should go deeper than that. As you rightly say a project of that depth would be engaging, time consuming and expensive. But different and more interesting. How to recognise the work of an artist is quite different from storing an item away on the strength of a label or consensus of a bunch of people who are only skimming the surface.

It boils down to identification and I would rather be involved in teacing that than accumulating facts simply for reference. Those type of facts are much too shallow for where I want to go. Maybe we combine all.

We can continue to discuss this further.

Have you ever seen the unfinished back side of a very, very, very late Guarneri del Gesu head?
That's what I'm talkin' about!

Did I say that? Must have been during one of "delusional" periods. Will send a picture. If you don't think it looks right I will delete my post and apologize profusely.
