Following a meal out today we planned to go and see a film afterwards.
The title is somewhat uninspiring and may lead you to think you are about to see another cringing english comedy. But that is not the case.
The boy in the striped pyjamasdirector Mark Herman and the book?s author John Boyne.
John Boyne?s novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas deals with the subject of how much children understood of the horrors that were going on around them during the concentration camps. Boyne tells the story from both sides of the camp fence. The story is told through the eyes of the nine-year-old son of the camp commandant, who explores his new garden and the strange looking neighbours around him, who oddly seem to be dressed in their night clothes.
His innocent mind as yet unaffected by propaganda, sees the boy, Schmuel, on the opposite side of the wire simply as a friend, and he offers help by joining him to look for his missing father.
The book, which has sold three million copies, is a powerful read. The film, simple enough in direction will leave you wanting to see the light of day even before the credits roll. Best to watch in the early afternoon.
