The Shadow of the Wind

by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

I was given this novel for a birthday present  a couple of years ago by a dear friend, also into books, and had been saving it for the right moment to read.  May sound a bit odd to some people, but I had guessed it would be a kinda special read, as the novels she likes are quite magical.  I go through phases or reading, then stop. I recently got back into reading and managed to finish a novel I had tried to read many times,  However, this novel left me a bit disappointed, which those who have been on this site will know was Atonement......... so at the moment, I really needa special book. . . . . well this is it...... I am only half way through, but it is really lovely, the type of novel that for me encompasses and explores all that I feel is special about reading and the power of a book...... ah its far more than that, but for me at the moment it is just what I need, to truly enjoy a good read......

So it you want a special novel, give this a go, and if you enjoy it you hopefully wont have long to wait for the next one which is due out soon. . . . .

Never heard of this novel or the author...  What is it about?  Is it a South American writer?  If so, then the title sounds to me as if it would belong to the 'magic realism' literature wave that came out of South America (Garcia Marquez, Allende etc)?  Some great, magic books indeed...

::) Ah it might have been a good idea if I had mentioned what it is about, totally got carried away!

It is set in the old city of Barcelona, and tells the story of Daniel, who as a ten year old boy becomes gripped with the story off The Shadow of the Wind, and his hunt to find out more about the author.  Daniel is taken by his father to The Cemetry of forgotten books, a labyrinthe libary of forgotten and obscure titles.  Daniel is told he can chose one book to keep, but must never reveal how he got the book and where from. The book he choses is The Shadow of The Wind. Daniels life becomes intertwined with the novel, which twist and fold in on itself.  As the tale unfolds, Julian slowly unravels  the truth behind the life and death of Julian Carax, the author.  Its like a gothic melodrama, thriller, with magic murder and madness.

Its not a South American author, but a Spanish Author, published in 2002, and translated in 2004.  The feel is not the same as Allende, and G Marquez, yes they are great magic books. This has a gothic creepy feel, and is a bit dark. Its very engaging, and atmospheric, my mind is gripped in Barcelona and the images that the book brings to life.

Hope this gives you some idea of the type of novel it is. Apparently in Barcelona you are the odd one out if you haven't read it!

So if you feel inclined and get the chance give it a go.

 :)
